Dal dhokli

Today's recipe is Dal dhokli.
It is a traditional dish of the Gujarati cuisine generally prepared with dals (lentils) and wheat flour as base ingredients. It has soft textured dhokli submerged in semi thick dal like lentil gravy and has mild sweet and spicy taste of aromatic spices and crunchy peanuts.
Apart from being easy to prepare, healthy and stomach filling, this dal dhokli is capable of carrying an entire meal on its own.
INGREDIENTS :
1 cup Toovar Dal (split pigeon peas)
3 tbsp Peanuts
1/2 cup  Wheat Flour + for dusting
1/2 tsp Carom Seed(ajwain) (optional)
1 tbsp besanFlour (gram flour)
2 tsp turmeric Powder
1/4 tsp hing (asafoetida)
2 tsp Red Chilli Powder
1/2 tbsp Coriander Powder
1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds
1 tsp Cumin Seeds
1 Dry Red Chilli, broken into two pieces
1 spring Curry Leaf
3 Clove
2 Cinnamon
3 tbsp Lemon Juice
1/2 cup Jaggery
3 dry Kokam
3 tbsp Oil
3 cups Water
Salt as per taste
Chopped Coriander Leaves.

Boil Tooverdal , whip it a bit and put it on flame. Add jaggery,dry kokam and salt.
Take a small pan, add 1 tbsp.oil, heat it,add mustard seeds. When it starts bursting, add cumin seeds and hing, add clove, cinnamon sticks, curry leaves and broken red chilli. Lastly add 1 tsp turmeric powder.
Add this tadka to dal which is kept for boiling. Add 3 cups of water. Add peanuts and let it boil for 5 to 7 minutes.
While dal is being prepared, make dough for dhokli.
Take a deep spread dish, add wheat floor and besan and mix both well. Add 2 tbsp oil, mix properly. Add turmeric, red chilli powder, and salt to taste. Add ajwain, crushed slightly by hands. Mix everything well and start kneading the dough with water.
Add water as needed make medium but soft dough. Make three or four balls from this dough.
Start rolling these balls, thin like roti, then cut it with knife in small square shaped pieces.
Roll all the dough balls the same way, and dust it with little wheat floor.
Once dal starts boiling, allow it to boil for 5 to 7 minutes. Then add dhokli one by one.
Remember, if dal is not boiling then dhokli will stick to each other.
After adding all the dhokli, let the dal boil for atleast for 10 minutes so dhokli get cooked.
Add lemon juice and garnish with chopped coriander.

Serve this Dal dhokli with raw onion and tomatoes chopped finely with or without rice. Its very tasty and a wholesome meal in itself. It is an ideal comforting food for people having toothache or recovering from illness as it combines goodness of both roti and dal in one.
